This bull elk had an impressively symmetrical rack. Studies have shown that symmetry is important to the opposite sex, both in humans when we look at others' faces and in the animal world, too.

In Colorado, there are few natural predators of elk. We no longer have grizzly or wolves in the state, and cougars and black bear are not as numerous as they once were. This has resulted in an elk population boom. As people build in elk habitat, the herds oftentimes reclaim their historic grounds. They move into town and can inhabit golf courses, back yards, roads, and parks. Another problem that has affected certain herds is that of chronic wasting disease, a prion-based illness.

Once a bull has attracted a harem, he will guard the group jealously. If a cow wanders away the bull tears off in pursuit, to drive her back to the group. The bull will mate with each cow as she comes into estrus. Males expend so much energy during the rut that they lose a large percentage of their body weight and often don't survive the next winter.

A bull elk attracts a harem of cows by "bugling." The sound can resemble a pulsing scream and carries over long distances. The male's neck swells and he arches it with each bugle. This fall ritual is brought on by the subsiding of light levels, which in turn triggers an increase in hormone levels in both the bulls and cows.
