Rocky Mountain elk are one of the biggest mammals in Colorado. Bulls (males) can weigh 700 pounds and have antlers with a spread of up to five feet. In September and early October the rut, or mating season, takes place. Bulls will make their way down to the large herds of cows (females) and their calves (young).
"Stretching Her Neck"
A herd of elk was crossing the Big Thompson River in Colorado. This cow stayed in the water for a long time, repeatedly contorting her neck. I wondered if she was stretching or perhaps trying to scratch an itch. Her antics made for a comical photo. This image is sized for printing ideally at 8 x 10" or smaller.
